The food self-sufficiency level of Japan is the lowest among advanced nations. The aging agricultural population has reached a critical point. Against this background, the "New Fundamental Law of Food, Agriculture and Agricultural Communities," the so-called " new fundamental law of agriculture" has been introduced in the current session of the National Diet. This law will have a tremendous impact on the future of Japanese agriculture. The significance and implications of this law are the subjects of a series of questions we directed to Diet Member Mitsuhiro Uesugi, presently serving as a deputy cabinet secretary, who has taken up issues relating to agricultural as his political task, as concerns of the Ministry of Agriculture, ZENCHU, and others concerned with Japan's agriculture future.
